These incredible trilobites are from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and are in near-perfect condition. The fossils are excavated by hand from a carbonate mud matrix and the trilobite trade in Morocco comprises an important aspect of the local economy. Trilobites of the Genus Cornuproetus, Order Proetida are Devonian in age, ranging from 419-358 million years old. These trilobites are easily identified by their genal spines extending from the cephalon through almost the entire length of the body.
Trilobites in Morocco undergo varying amounts of shell restoration to enhance their appearance, as they are often excavated with some imperfections. Any fossil that is buried for hundreds of millions of years, like these trilobites, will come out of the ground with minor imperfections, and small cracks may exist.
